Elon Musk (Musk), Tesla CEO and Chairman, said, "The Roadster has been a great success, but no one at this company remains satisfied with the status quo. The Roadster Sport embodies Tesla's spirit of continuous improvement."4

Tesla was started by Martin Eberhard (Eberhard) in 2003, to manufacture and market electric cars that would be powered by Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. The funding for this venture was initially provided by Musk, one of the founders of PayPal5. Later, a number of wealthy individuals and private equity firms provided additional funding to the company.

The Roadster was based on Lotus Cars' (Lotus)6 sports car the 'Lotus Elise'. However, Tesla engineers modified the design of the Elise with a view to improving its looks and making it more suitable for the electric-drivetrain.

The company licensed some of the technology used in the Roadster, but its engineers designed the electric motor, battery pack, and other crucial components.

Tesla sourced most of the auto parts from suppliers around the world. The car was assembled by Lotus in the UK and shipped to the US.7

The Roadster was unveiled in June 2006. It could go from 0-60 miles in four seconds, and had a maximum speed of 125 mph and a range of 220 miles. It was well received by the general public, with the company receiving several orders. Tesla planned to begin delivery of the cars by 2007...
